Session 3. Learning By Example: Connecting Data Competencies with the Texas Data Repository

Launching the Texas Data Repository: How to Implement TDR at Your Institution: Part 1

The Texas Data Repository (TDR), a new service offered by the Texas Digital Library, is a platform for publishing and archiving datasets and other data products created by faculty, staff, and students at Texas higher education institutions. The repository, which is built in the open source application Dataverse, will enable TDL member libraries to provide research data management services to their campus communities that will: enable compliance with federal mandates for data archiving and sharing, increase the scholarly impact of datasets through assignment of persistent online identifiers and citations, and facilitate limited sharing within research groups, data versioning, and long-term preservation.
In this webinar, Kristi Park (Director of the TDL) and Santi Thompson (Head of Digital Repository Services at the University of Houston Libraries and chair of the TDL Dataverse Implementation Working Group) will give an overview of the repository service, requirements for TDL member participation, and plans for the future of the service.
Launching DPN’s Texas Preservation Node: Digital Preservation for the Texas Academy

Leadership from the Digital Preservation Network (DPN) will join the Texas Digital Library staff to discuss the launch of the Texas Preservation Node, an ingestion point to the Digital Preservation Network.
DPN (http://dpn.org) is a large-scale digital preservation service that is built to last beyond the life spans of individuals, technological systems, and organizations. DPN provides members of the academy and their successors with assurance that future access to their scholarly resources will be available in the event of disruptive change in administrative or physical institutional environments. By establishing a redundant and varied technical and legal infrastructure the survival, ownership and management of preserved digital content in the future is assured for DPN members.
TDL members will have access to the DPN service through the Texas Preservation Node, a partnership among the University of Texas at Austin Libraries, the TDL, and the Texas Academic Computing Center.
This webinar will provide TDL members with details of the Digital Preservation Network and the Texas Preservation Node service, including information about the DPN service model, requirements for use, costs, general technology infrastructure, and ingestion workflow.

On May 5, from 10:30 – 11:30 CST, Judy Ruttenberg, SHARE program director for the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), and Cynthia Hudson-Vitale, ARL Visiting Program Officer for SHARE, will provide a one-hour webinar for the Texas Digital Library community on the SHARE project, highlighting the latest technical and community developments and how TDL libraries can participate and benefit from SHARE. Ruttenberg and Hudson-Vitale will cover the what, why, and how of SHARE as an open source and higher education effort to build a free, open data set of research and scholarly activity across the life cycle. SHARE is addressing institutions’ need for data about their own activities, and libraries’s mission to collect, provide access, and preserve those activities. The presentation will also describe a new Curation Association program that SHARE is launching to involve library professionals in curating the SHARE (meta)data set in a professional development and service learning context.
