SUMMIT RE-CAP
In November 2018, Texas Digital Library and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission helped organize a Texas Statewide OER Summit, hosted by The University of Texas at San Antonio. More than 100 librarians, administrators, faculty, and students from over 60 institutions across Texas attended to learn more about OER and to work together towards consensus on a statewide agenda for affordable resources.
On the second day of the Summit, attendees engaged in a series of facilitated discussions and exercises intended to develop consensus around priorities for statewide action in Texas. Dr. Maggie Melo, Assistant Professor in the School of Library and Information Science at UNC Chapel Hill, served as the facilitator for these discussions. Working in groups throughout the day, participants articulated and narrowed a set of priority “themes” around which goals and strategies could be developed.
The top 3 themes prioritized by the group were:
- Issues related to funding and sustainability for OER programs.
- Concerns among faculty about the impact of OER incentives on academic freedom, coupled with the sometimes competing desire for course standardization.
- Opportunities provided by a strong history of library collaboration within the state.
Groups also made recommendations about specific goals and actions to achieve those goals. There is much more work to be done, including the development of a detailed report and analysis of meeting outcomes. Materials from the Summit have been posted to the TDL Repository, and the completed Summit report will also be deposited there. A preliminary report was published in the 2018 winter Texas Library Association Journal. The full issue is available online here, pages 20-21.

Summit Details
November 15-16, 2018 | The University of Texas at San Antonio
Academic librarians, faculty, and administrators with an interest in Open Educational Resources are invited to attend a strategic planning summit to consider OER at a statewide level. We hope to develop a set of shared goals and strategies that can be implemented across the state.
There will be no registration fee, but the number of attendees will initially be capped at two per institution. Library deans and directors will designate two attendees from their institutions. The deadline to register is Thursday, November 1, 2018 at 5pm.

ANNOUNCING THE OER BOOT CAMP
Registrants of the Texas OER Summit are invited to participate in an OER Bootcamp, facilitated by Texas A&M University-San Antonio and the University of Houston, and featuring panelists from Texas Tech University, University of Texas at Arlington, and University of Texas at San Antonio. This session, which will take place immediately prior to the start of the Summit, is intended to provide an overview of Open Educational Resources for attendees new to these concepts and related activities.
Attendance is optional, and we ask that you please sign up using the form below by November 12, 2018.
OER Boot Camp Program
The OER Boot Camp will be facilitated by Pru Morris, Digital Resources Manager, Texas A&M University-San Antonio, and Ariana Santiago, Open Educational Resources Coordinator at the University of Houston. The event will feature panelists Michelle Reed, Open Education Librarian at University of Texas at Arlington, Camille Thomas, Scholarly Communication Librarian, Texas Tech University, and DeeAnn Ivie, Open Education Coordinator, University of Texas at San Antonio, followed by a Q&A.
You are encouraged to bring your lunch to the session. Restaurants are in the food court on 1st floor of the John Peace Library. With so many good lunch options… be in line at the food court by 10:30 in order to make the 11am start time.
We have a lot of content to cover and want to make sure we have ample time for questions at the end of the presentations from our panelists, so please be present and ready for the Boot Camp promptly at 11:00 a.m.
